WWAS Silver Jubilee Celebrations

12 July 2008 saw a large marquee covering the garden of the Hotel du Vin including the fountain! It was decorated by the hotel staff to cater for the large crowd of member, former members and friends who came together for an evening of entertainment, good food, great wines and great company.

This celebration was for 25 years of growing both in our knowledge, although that is always a catch-up game, the range of our activities and not least the camaraderie of likeminded friends.

Guest were welcomed with Bollinger Special Cuvee Champagne as the evening started with the television and stage actor Julian Curry performing his widely acclaimed show HIC!

Julian Curry's widely acclaimed show HIC!

A light hearted history of wine and wine making, informative and entertaining, brought dramatically to life by a wealth of anecdotes and quotations from wine lovers, both real and fictitious. You probably know Julian Curry from seeing him numerous times on television or stage. He is perhaps best known as Claude Erskine-Brown on the ITV/PBS series Rumpole of the Bailey, and has appeared with the Royal Shakespeare Company, at the National Theatre, and in many shows in London's West End.

Then we welcomed Jean-Charles Cazes, General Manager of the Cazes group of wineries. Most of you will know of the influence of his father Jean-Michel Cazes. The family owns properties such as Ch. Lynch Bages (The Englishman's Favourite) and Ch. Ormes de Pez. Jean-Charles will gave us a background to the estates and then a tasting of their non-Bordeaux wineries, including their Australian and Portuguese Joint Ventures accompanied with Tapas:

  • Tappanappa Whalebone Cabernet/Shiraz 2004
  • Xisto 2004
  • Ostal Cazes, La Liviniere, Minervois 2005
  • Domaine des Senechaux, CNDP 2005

We were really privileged that he brought some great old vintages of Ch. Lynch Bages and Ch. Ormes de Pez direct from their cellars. What a treat!

All attendees received a Riedel Vinum glass especially created to include the WWAS logo and members with more than 10 years service were presented with boxed sets of these glasses by Chairman24 years, Philip Evins. Our two longest serving members with 24 years, Alex and Mary Armstrong then accepted a boxed port set for their joining year 1984 from the members.
